Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1792–1868) was one of the most prolific and commercially successful American cartographers and publishers of the 19th century. Based in Philadelphia, he produced Mitchell's School Atlas, Mitchell's New General Atlas, and numerous regional maps that reached a vast American audience. Mitchell's maps are characterized by their clear, practical design, accurate delineation of the rapidly changing American landscape, and crisp steel engraving with hand-applied coloring — making them among the most recognizable and widely collected American antique maps today.
