Article description

Lithograph, hand-colored in outline by Mitchell, Samuel Augustus, published 1846 by S. Augustus Mitchell, Philadelphia. Image size: 310 by 372mm (12 by 14 inches). Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1792–1868) was one of the most prolific and commercially successful American cartographers and publishers of the 19th century. Based in Philadelphia, he produced Mitchell's School Atlas, Mitchell's New General Atlas, and numerous regional maps that reached a vast American audience. Mitchell's maps are characterized by their clear, practical design, accurate delineation of the rapidly changing American landscape, and crisp steel engraving with hand-applied coloring — making them among the most recognizable and widely collected American antique maps today. Original antique map of Connecticut published in Mitchell's New Universal Atlas, showing early railroads, streets, townships, canals, rivers etc. The map is hand colored in wash and in outline showing the counties of Connecticut. In the county of Middlesex next to the city of Middletown the Wesleyan University is as well shown on the map. Original hand color in outline and wash when published.
