Article description
Copper engraving, hand colored in outline and wash when published. This map by Christopher Weigel is depicting the 'Ancient Germany' engraved after the classical authors Mela, Tacitus and Plinius. It shows the 'Antique Germania' with its ancient place names in Latin language, the map extends in the north towards parts of Scandinavia with the Baltic Sea and the German Sea. As the southern boundary the river Danube was used. At the lower right corner we find a wonderful pictorial engraving showing a highly decorative mythological classical scene, further on in the upper left corner an inset with ancient coins. The cartographer Christoph Weigel worked around 1719 in Nürnberg and his maps are showing the typical style of this period in mapmaking in Southern German. He worked very close as with Johann B. Homann in Nürnberg. All his maps were hand colored in outline and decorative body color immediately in his printing house, after they were printed. Recently viewed products
