Article description
Copper engraving, hand colored in outline when published. The map of the United States by the French cartographer and engraver Pierre Francois Tardieu is one of the most rarest and interesting published large wall maps in this period. Based on the map of the United States by Arrowsmith, Tardieu re-engraved the map completely. Tardieu has also added an inset plan of Washington DC just above the highly decorative title cartouche, which is showing the Niagara Falls. This plan of Washington is based on Andrew Ellicott s plan of Washington. This map of the United States is a milestone in the American Cartography before the explorations of Lewis & Clark, who used the 1802 edition of Arrowsmith s map, which was probably decisive in choosing the route along the delineation of the course of the Missouri River shown on the Arrowsmith map and as it seemed to be for them the direct route to the West Coast. The captains had with them the first of two issues dated 1802, and the fifth issue, now known, of the map. On it are representations of the Rocky Mountains running south to New Mexico and the conjectured course and branches of the Missouri river between the Great Bend and the Rocky Mountains — dotted lines represent the conjectured courses. The representations derived from information obtained by Peter Fidler, surveyor for the Hudson s Bay Company, and transmitted to Arrowsmith by the Company. Warren Heckrotte - Aaron Arrowsmith s Map of North America and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. (Published 1 June 1987 in The Map Collector)
