Article description5 volumes. Each volume with title and table of contents. Vol. 1 with the list of subscribers. At all illustrated with 367 fine hand colored lithographed plates, mostly heightened with gum-arabic, by Gould, Henry Constantine Richter, J. Wolf and W. Hart, most lithographed by Richter and Hart. Printed by Walter or Walter & Cohn. Each of the fine hand colored lithographic plates is accompanied by a leaf of describing text. John Gould's series 'the Birds of Great Britain' was his most successful series of bird books. He fully developed his aesthetic style in working this series including also plates with nests and images of young birds. About 750 copies of this work were produced and were sold successfully during the publication. Late 19th to early 20th century full green morocco binding, spines richly gilt, gilt edges and covers. Corners and edges slightly scuffed or rubbed. Throughout very clean and in fine hand coloring. A few text pages with minor spotting, a few plates with tiny spots. Early printing of the plates. The plate of the snow owl before the crack in the lithograph stone. A very fine copy. 550 by 370mm (21¾ by 14½ inches).
