Article description
Copper engraving, uncolored as published. This is the rare state of Ortelius' 'Regni Valentiae ...', where the straight capitals for 'MARIS/ MEDITERRANEI PARS' at the bottom in the sea area were used. This plate, where only a few few copies are known, was later succeeded by the new engraved plate with the cursive capitals. We also find more differences between the two plates, like for example 'Arragoniae Pars' was engraved here in two lines instead of in three lines. The map itself is ornated with three cartouches, in the lower centre the decorative title cartouche, in the lower left corner we find a decorative scale of mileage, in the upper left corner an additional title cartouche with the 'privilegium'. Villages and towns are shown as miniature views, moreover the map is ornated with ships. Latin text verso, without page number. The text of the last line ,diem; conniuentibus Rege & Inquistione' is left aligned. According to the bibliography by van der Broecke only 100 copies in this state were printed.
