Article description
Copper engraving, hand colored in outline and wash when published. Shows Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia with the Red Sea and the shores of Saudi Arabia. Title cartouche engraved at top right. Franz Ludwig Güssefeld (* 6 December 1744 in Osterburg; † 17 June 1808 in Weimar) was a Prussian cartographer. From an early age he showed a talent for drawing and an interest in maps and geography. So he came to work for the building director Hahn in Königsberg in Prussia. With him and J.J. Petris he worked on the surveying of the Netze-Bruch. These measurements formed the basis for the later drainage of the area. His attempt to join the Prussian pioneer troops failed nevertheless. So he went to Saxony-Weimar and initially became a forester. In 1773 he came into contact with the geographer Anton Friedrich Büsching, who from then on supplied him with geographical data. His map of Brandenburg was published by Homanns Erben (Johann Baptist Homann). Because of his success he became the publisher's saviour. He published around 100 more maps over the next few years. They were all famous for their accuracy and made Güssefeld one of the most respected and productive cartographers in Germany in the second half of the 18th century. From 1808, Güssefeld worked for the Landes-Industrie-Comptoir und Geographische Institut von Bertuch in Weimar. (Wikipedia)
