C.P.R. 1776'. An unusual and rare map by Pierre-Nicolas Buret de Longchamp at the outset of the Seven Years' War showing the British colonies in North America with a part of Louisiana. Great Britain and its allies ultimately triumphed in the Seven Years' War. Though commonly known as the French and Indian War in North America, the conflict was part of a broader global struggle between Britain and France for supremacy in colonial territories around the world. As a result of the war, Great Britain gained extensive territory from France, including Canada and all French lands east of the Mississippi River. Britain also acquired Florida from Spain. These territorial gains significantly expanded the British Empire. However, the cost of the war led Britain to impose new taxes on its American colonies—measures that would eventually fuel unrest and spark the American Revolution. Despite Britain's success, Native American tribes—many of whom had allied with both the French and the British—suffered greatly. Their influence diminished, and they faced increasing pressure and control from British forces. Additionally, the map includes an inset in the lower right corner featuring portions of Louisiana, Florida, and the Carolinas. Three mileage scales are engraved at the bottom center. The map displays a considerable number of place names, with rivers and lakes clearly labeled and finely detailed. It also includes the names of forts and various Native American tribes, adding further historical and geographical context. The upper right area of the map shows some soiling. In the lower right corner, there is an old repaired tear, approximately four inches long, extending from the margin into the inset map. There is also minor fraying along the edges and general signs of handling. However, this remains a very good example of a rare and uncommon map of North America, depicting the English possessions in 1776 during the Seven Years' War. The map is presented in its original period outline color, which clearly delineates the political boundaries of the time.
