Article description
2 vol. small 4to. Full calf, spine in five compartments, gilt and richly decorated. XVI, 687 pp.; 568 pp. A classical text in Latin and Greek about the aphorisms of Hippocrates with various annotations in Latin and Greek language. In lieu of an abstract M.D. Dickson W. Richards provides here is a brief excerpt of the content translated into English: Life is short, the art long, opportunity fleeting, experiment treacherous, judgment difficult. This quintet of epigrams, as everyone knows, forms the first part of the First Aphorism of Hippocrates. It sets forth, as a background for the teaching of the practice of medicine, the difficulties and the hazards which the physician must face. The beginning is as impressive as it is famous—the gently fatalistic contrast between life and "art," stated with simplicity and clearness.
