Article description
Original antique copper engraving, hand colored in outline when published. Engraved by Cordier. The map is based on the cartographic sources by Nicolaus Sanson (1600-1667). It was was published in Jaillot's "Atlas françois". This antique map extends from Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean Sea in the west towardsthe northwestern coast of Australia and Papua New Guinea. In the left upper corner ornated with a large highly decorative allegoric title-cartouche. Further we find a delailed mileage scale with the date, the privileg and the imprint of Hubert Jaillot. This large map by the French cartographer Alexis-Hubert Jaillot impresses by its details in geographic place names,further engraved mountains and rivers, etc are engraved. An older repaired tear in the blank area of the map (in the Indian Ocean) and at the lower centre fold, else in very good condition and decorative hand color.
