Article description
Copper engraving, hand colored in outline and wash when published. Latin text edition. This map of Islandiae (Iceland) by Guiljelmus Blaeu is also an exiting and spectacular example of a highly decorative early seventeenth century map of Iceland. It was published by Guiljelmus Blaeu in Amsterdam. The map is ornated with two cartouches at the bottom, at the left side an allegoric ornamental title-cartouche and on the right side a mileage scale ornated with a small sailing ship next to it. Moreover the map is ornated with various sea monsters, animals and a breathtaking scene of an erupting vulcano. Iceland's mountain chains, rivers, villages and other small places are also engraved. The centre fold with minor stains, some marginal small fraying at the top, further marginal water stains outside the image of the map. An attractive map in good condition. Recently viewed products
