Article description
Sm.-8vo. Modern leather binding. Spine gilt. 15 unnum. leaves (last bl.), 852 pp., 6 unnum. leaves; title (in facsimile) with 1 printer's mark and verso with the portrait of Fuchs and illustrated with about 510 early woodcuts of herbals in text. 2nd printing in this size, with the reduced size of the woodcut illustrations. The woodcuts seem to be cut after the first edition (folio size) of 1542, not after the Basler octavo-edition. A good and acceptable copy, the woodcut illustrations in clear impressions. A few pages at the beginning with a minor upper marginal fraying, some of them with mostly marginal skillfully mendings or restorations; page 15 with two marginal tears without loss, from page 600 onwards soiling or water staining in the upper right corner, towards the end also in the lower right corner, affecting the text. A few pages (pp. 626-640) with minor short splits in the upper blank margin. Two small wormholes in the blank lower white margin from page 662 towards the end. The last leave with a short tear in the upper margin. The title-page had been lacking and was replaced expertly by a facsimile on old paper.
