Article description
Engraved title and 103 engraved emblemata engravings in text. 11 unnum. leaves, 831 p., 4 leaves. (last 2 blank). 1640 first published `emblematic mirror of princes` by the Spanish author and diplomat Diego de Saavedra-Fajardo (1584-1648). The emblem book, which has been repeatedly reissued and translated many times over the centuries - "In the thematic area of political emblematics, the Fürstenspiegel by the Spanish diplomat Diego de Saavedra Fajardo is by no means the first, but it is probably the most successful work." - contains 101 text-image combinations that illustrate the moral and political demands that are made of an ideal-typical prince from a Christian point of view. This edition also contains Saavedra's foreword, dated `Vienna, 10 July 1640`, addressed to the Spanish prince, to his work, which he claims to have been written at intervals on his diplomatic trips through Germany.
