Original copper engraving, later hand colored in wash, published 1578 in volume I in the townbook 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' by Braun and Hogenberg. The entire series of the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' comprised six volumes and were published and printed from 1572 towards 1619. The townbooks by Braun & Hogenberg are probably the most important series of early city views ever published. Decorative bird's eye map of the Imperial troops in front of the fortified city Ingolstadt in Bavaria during the Schmalkaldic War (1546 until 1547) on August 24th, 1546. The Schmalkaldic War broke out in July 1546 in Swabia because several Lutharan Imperial cities occupied the Catholic town Füssen, which was in possession of the Augsburg bishop. The Emperor knew, that he could play for time and did not accept the battle. He entrenched himself with his troops rather in his positions, the mighty fortress Ingolstadt in the back. The Protestant army did not dare to attack the well-guarded positions and therefore broke off the siege of Ingolstadt after a few days. The consideration of the Bavarian neutrality may have played a role in this decision.
