A fine and example of Ertl's celebrated cartographic work, documenting this region of Germany with the precision and decorative artistry characteristic of the 16800s. Anton Wilhelm Ertl was a cartographer active in the 1600s, working in the tradition of European copper-engraved cartography. Their maps are valued by collectors for their historical accuracy and decorative quality. This plate presents a original copperplate engraving depicting the city of Gravenwerd (Grafenwöhr), published in Nürnberg, Peter Bleul, 1687-1705. One or more coats of arms are incorporated into the decorative programme. Such topographic views from Ertl's workshop are primary historical documents of German urban history in the 1600s, now prized equally by historians, map collectors, and interior decorators. Sheet measures 288 by 345mm (11 by 13 inches).. In good condition overall, with minor signs of age appropriate for a 17th-century engraving.
