Hand-Colored Original Copperplate Engraving by Jean Covens & Cornelius Mortier, depicting Ducatus Bremae & Ferdae Maximaeque partis Fluminis Visurgis Descriptio per Fredericum De Witt. Amstelodami ex officina R. & J. Ottens.. Published Amsterdam, 1740. Sheet: 485 by 555mm (19 by 21 inches).. A fine and original hand-colored example of Covens's celebrated cartographic work, documenting this region of Germany with the precision and decorative artistry characteristic of the 17400s. Jean Covens (1697-1774) and Cornelius Mortier (1699-1783) were Amsterdam-based publishers who acquired and republished many plates from earlier Dutch cartographers including Frederick de Wit. Their firm, active from around 1721 to the 1770s, was one of the last great Amsterdam cartographic publishers, continuing the tradition of fine Dutch engraving and hand coloring well into the 18th century. This original copperplate engraving, with original hand coloring depicts the region of Ducatus Bremae & Ferdae Maximaeque partis Fluminis Visurgis Descriptio per Fredericum De Witt. Amstelodami ex officina R. & J. Ottens., published in Amsterdam, 1740. The map features a decorative Baroque cartouche containing the title inscription. A distance scale is incorporated within the cartouche or alongside it. The map records the political and geographic boundaries of the region as understood in 1740, offering a fascinating window into the history of German territorial organization. Sheet measures 485 by 555mm (19 by 21 inches).. In good condition overall, with minor signs of age appropriate for a 18th-century engraving.
