Hand-Colored Original Copperplate Engraving by Petrus Schenk & Gerard Valck, depicting Principatus Hennenbergensis. Published Amsterdam, P. Schenk, 1700. Sheet: 373 by 490mm (14 by 19 inches).. A fine and original hand-colored example of Schenk's celebrated cartographic work, documenting this region of Germany with the precision and decorative artistry characteristic of the 17000s. Petrus Schenk (1660-1718/19) and Gerard Valck (1651/52-1726) were Amsterdam-based Dutch cartographers and publishers who formed one of the most productive partnerships in early 18th-century cartography. Working from Amsterdam, they published finely engraved maps of European territories, often based on earlier works by de Wit, Visscher, and other Dutch masters. Their maps are noted for elegant cartouches, fine hand coloring, and high engraving quality, representing a continuation of the great Dutch tradition of cartographic excellence. This original copperplate engraving, with original hand coloring depicts the region of Principatus Hennenbergensis, published in Amsterdam, P. Schenk, ca. 1700. The map features a decorative Baroque cartouche containing the title inscription. A distance scale is incorporated within the cartouche or alongside it. The map records the political and geographic boundaries of the region as understood in ca. 1700, offering a fascinating window into the history of German territorial organization. Sheet measures 373 by 490mm (14 by 19 inches).. In good condition overall, with minor signs of age appropriate for a 18th-century engraving.
