Original antique hand-colored copper engraving, published 1719. Depicting Bay of Naples, this map is a fine example of 0s European cartography. Image: 290 by 385mm (11 by 15 inches). An attractive and historically significant 18th-century map for the discerning collector. Christoph Weigel the Elder (1654–1725) was a German engraver, art dealer, and publisher based in Nuremberg. He was a close collaborator of Johann Baptist Homann and produced maps and illustrated works for the flourishing Nuremberg publishing industry of the early 18th century. All his maps were hand-colored in his printing house, following the Nuremberg tradition of applying rich outline and decorative body color immediately after printing. His maps are typified by fine engraving, elaborate cartouches, and the warm tones of contemporary Nuremberg hand coloring. Decorativ map of the Bay of Naples with the city of Puteoli graphically depicted. The map is beautifully engraved to show all the major Roman sites in the region including fortresses, villas, coliseums and roads. The large title cartouche in the upper left incorporates various types of Roman coins. A fine example from published by C.
