Article description
Hand-Colored Original Woodcut by Hartmann Schedel, depicting Constancia.. Published Nürnberg, Koberger, 1493. Sheet: 203 by 530mm (8 by 20 inches).. A fine and original hand-colored example of Schedel's celebrated cartographic work, documenting this region of Germany with the precision and decorative artistry characteristic of the 14900s. Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514) was a German physician and humanist from Nuremberg whose Liber Chronicarum (Nuremberg Chronicle, 1493) was one of the great illustrated books of the early printing era. Published by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg, it contained over 1,800 woodcut illustrations by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, including city views that represent some of the earliest printed images of German cities. The Nuremberg Chronicle is one of the most important and most collected incunabula (books printed before 1501) in existence. This plate presents a original woodcut, with original hand coloring depicting the city of Constancia., published in Nürnberg, Koberger, 1493. Such topographic views from Schedel's workshop are primary historical documents of German urban history in the 1400s, now prized equally by historians, map collectors, and interior decorators. Sheet measures 203 by 530mm (8 by 20 inches).. In good condition overall, with minor signs of age appropriate for a 15th-century engraving. Ready to frame.Constancia. - Hartmann Schedel ∑ Hand-Colored Original Woodcut ∑ Nürnberg 1493
