Article description

Article description

Original copper engraving, hand colored in wash and published ca. 1619 in volume IV of the famous town book Civitates Orbis Terrarum by Braun and Hogenberg. The entire series of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum comprised six volumes and was published and printed from 1572 towards 1619 in Cologne. This decorative city plan shows Neuss in a bird´s eye view. The plan is equipped with many details of houses, streets, trees, animals, the fortifications around the town, the river Erft, etc. In the lower right and left corner we find allegoric cartouches. One of this has the explanation of the map and the other has a Latin historical text inside.
