Article description
Original Woodcut by Hartmann Schedel, depicting Meintz (Mainz). Published Augsburg, Johann Schönsperger., 1500. Sheet: 23.5 x 15 cm (9.25 x 6 inches).. A fine and example of Schedel's celebrated cartographic work, documenting this region of Germany with the precision and decorative artistry characteristic of the 15000s. Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514) was a German physician and humanist from Nuremberg whose Liber Chronicarum (Nuremberg Chronicle, 1493) was one of the great illustrated books of the early printing era. Published by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg, it contained over 1,800 woodcut illustrations by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, including city views that represent some of the earliest printed images of German cities. The Nuremberg Chronicle is one of the most important and most collected incunabula (books printed before 1501) in existence. This original woodcut depicts the region of Meintz (Mainz), published in Augsburg, Johann Schönsperger., 1500. The map records the political and geographic boundaries of the region as understood in 1500, offering a fascinating window into the history of German territorial organization. Sheet measures 23.5 x 15 cm (9.25 x 6 inches).. In good condition overall, with minor signs of age appropriate for a 16th-century engraving.
