Article description
Highly detailed antique map of Europe in original outline and wash color, by the celebrated German cartographer Franz Ludwig Güssefeld (1744–1807), published by C. Weigel & Gottlieb Schneider, Nuremberg, 1794. Image: 395 x 490 mm (15.5 x 19.25 inches). Extends east to the Caspian Sea and Siberia, north to Greenland and Iceland. A strong impression with fine detail throughout. Franz Ludwig Güssefeld (1744–1807) was one of the foremost German cartographers of the late 18th century. Born in Osterburg, he produced more than 100 maps and is renowned for the exceptional accuracy and detail of his work. His maps were primarily published by the venerable Homann Heirs (Homann Erben) of Nuremberg, whose reputation he is widely credited with reviving. This map was published by the rival Nuremberg firm of C. Weigel & Gottlieb Schneider — another respected name in South German cartography. Güssefeld's maps are held in the Library of Congress, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, and major collections throughout Europe. This large, highly detailed map of Europe was published in 1794, capturing the continent's political geography on the eve of the Revolutionary Wars — making it a significant historical document. Political borders are shown in outline and wash color. The map extends from the British Isles east to Russia, the Caspian Sea, and Siberia; in the northwest, the eastern coast of Greenland and Iceland are depicted. Numerous engraved place names, rivers, and mountains appear throughout. A small mended wormhole in the upper blank margin; on the verso, the word 'Europa' is inscribed in old ink letters. In excellent condition. A strong, sharp impression. Colors fresh and vivid. Small mended wormhole in the upper blank margin; verso inscribed 'Europa' in old ink. No tears or foxing. 395 x 490 mm.Charte von Europa – F. L. Güssefeld · Weigel & Schneider, Nürnberg 1794 · Original Hand-Colored Copper Engraving · Antique Map of Europe
