Article description
Original color lithograph mapping the main seismic impact zones in Central Europe, by the renowned German cartographer Augustus Heinrich Petermann (1822–1878), published by Justus Perthes, Gotha, 1856. Sheet: 190 x 244 mm (7.5 x 9.5 inches). An early scientific thematic map documenting earthquake activity across Europe — a rare and historically significant geological document. Augustus Heinrich Petermann (1822–1878) was one of the most important German cartographers of the 19th century. Born in Bleicherode, he trained at the Geographische Kunstschule in Potsdam under Heinrich Berghaus — a pupil of Alexander von Humboldt. After working in Edinburgh and London (1845–1854), Petermann returned to Gotha and joined the celebrated publisher Justus Perthes, where he founded the journal Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen (1855–2014), long one of the most prestigious geography journals in the world. A pioneer of thematic cartography, Petermann used maps to visualize scientific and statistical data — going far beyond conventional geographic mapping. This map documents the main habitual seismic impact zones (Stossgebiete) in Central Europe, compiled after the geological research of Dr. G. Hartmann Volger, and published in Gotha in 1856 — among the earliest systematic attempts to map earthquake activity across Europe. Published as part of Justus Perthes' Geographische Mitteilungen series, this is a rare and historically important document of 19th-century thematic cartography. A fine collector's piece from one of the most distinguished German geographical publishing houses. In excellent condition. Original colors fresh and bright. No tears, creases, or foxing. 190 x 244 mm.Karte der Stossgebiete Central-Europa – A. H. Petermann · Justus Perthes, Gotha 1856 · Original Color Lithograph · Antique Seismological Map
