Article description
Decorative original copper engraving with contemporary outline color, showing the Holy Roman Empire with its states, principalities, and sovereign territories, published by Jean-Baptiste Crépy, Paris, 1767. Image: 200 x 270 mm (7.75 x 10.5 inches). Ornate title cartouche framed by soldiers, a lion, an angel, and two coats of arms; German and Rhineland mile scales in the lower left. A fine French 18th-century map of the German Reich. Jean-Baptiste Crépy (fl. c. 1730–1796), known as Crépy le Jeune, was a prominent French map and print publisher based in Paris on the Rue St. Jacques. Part of the multi-generational Crépy publishing dynasty founded by his grandfather Jean Crépy (1660–1739), Jean-Baptiste was among the most active Parisian publishers of the mid-18th century, producing maps, prints, and geographically themed games. He collaborated with leading French mapmakers including André Basset. The Crépy firm published until 1790, when it went into liquidation. This map depicts the German Reich — the Holy Roman Empire — with its component states, principalities, and sovereign territories clearly shown. The coverage extends from the Danish border in the north to northern Italy in the south, and from Poland and Hungary in the east to France and England in the west. The decorative title cartouche in the upper left, framed by soldiers, a lion, an angel, and two heraldic shields, is characteristic of French 18th-century engraving at its most ornate. Two mile scales — one German, one Rhineland — appear in the lower left. Published in 1767, this is an attractive and informative document of the Holy Roman Empire on the eve of the French Revolution.
