Article description
Decorative original copper engraving with hand-applied outline color, depicting the Roman Empire after the scholarly work of Philippe Briet S.J., published by Johannes Janssonius in his historical Atlas, Amsterdam, c. 1649–1660. Image: 38.6 x 52.3 cm (15.25 x 20.5 inches). Ornate Renaissance cartouche at top; large decorative cartouche at bottom. Koeman I / 0830H:1. A fine example of Dutch Golden Age historical atlas cartography. Johannes Janssonius (Jan Janszoon; 1588, Arnhem – 1664, Amsterdam) was one of the most important Dutch cartographers and publishers of the 17th century. In 1612 he married the daughter of the great Jodocus Hondius, and subsequently formed a partnership with his brother-in-law Henricus Hondius to publish the landmark Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius Atlas Novus. Under Janssonius's leadership, the atlas grew from three volumes in 1638 to eleven volumes by 1660 — the Atlas Major — encompassing more than a thousand maps, city atlases, a maritime atlas, and a celestial atlas, with editions in Dutch, Latin, French, and German. Janssonius's maps are held in the Rijksmuseum, the British Library, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and every major research collection of Dutch Golden Age cartography. This map of the Roman Empire was designed by Philippe Briet (1601–1664), a Jesuit historian and geographer, for inclusion in Janssonius's historical atlas. Briet's work Parallela Geographiae Veteris et Novae was a leading geographic reference of the period. The composition is framed by a large decorative cartouche at the bottom and a Renaissance title cartouche at the top. The hand-applied outline coloring is characteristic of the Janssonius Amsterdam workshop at its finest. Koeman bibliographic reference: I / 0830H:1. In excellent condition.
