Article description
Original copper engraving with hand-applied outline color, depicting ancient Celtic Europe after the celebrated map by Abraham Ortelius, engraved by Evert Sijmonsz. Hamersveldt, published by Johannes Janssonius in his historical Atlas, Amsterdam, 1662. Image: 35.3 x 47.3 cm (14 x 18.5 inches). Koeman I / 1000H:1A. A historically important map of ancient Europe from one of the 17th century's greatest atlases. Johannes Janssonius (Jan Janszoon; 1588, Arnhem – 1664, Amsterdam) was one of the most important Dutch cartographers and publishers of the 17th century. In 1612 he married the daughter of the great Jodocus Hondius, and subsequently formed a partnership with his brother-in-law Henricus Hondius to publish the landmark Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius Atlas Novus. Under Janssonius's leadership, the atlas grew from three volumes in 1638 to eleven volumes by 1660 — the Atlas Major — encompassing more than a thousand maps, city atlases, a maritime atlas, and a celestial atlas, with editions in Dutch, Latin, French, and German. Janssonius's maps are held in the Rijksmuseum, the British Library, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and every major research collection of Dutch Golden Age cartography. This map of ancient Celtic Europe is based on the famous plate of Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598), the Antwerp cartographer who published the world's first modern atlas — the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum — in 1570. Ortelius's 'Europam sive Celiticam Veterem' was among the most important depictions of ancient Europe produced in the 16th century. The engraving for this 1662 edition was executed by Evert Sijmonsz. Hamersveldt, a leading Amsterdam engraver. This piece brings together two of the greatest names in the history of European cartography — Ortelius and Janssonius — and is a highly collectible historical document.
