Article description
Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting St. Omer. Published by G. Braun & F. Hogenberg, Cologne, 1598. Sheet: 345 by 380mm (13 by 15 inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Georg Braun & Franz Hogenberg, rich in period detail and historical significance. Georg Braun (1541–1622) was a German cleric and topo-geographer who served as the principal editor of the monumental town atlas Civitates Orbis Terrarum, published in six volumes between 1572 and 1617 by the Hogenberg workshop in Cologne. Together with engraver Frans Hogenberg (1535–1590), Braun assembled 546 bird's-eye views, prospects, and plans of cities across the known world — the most ambitious urban cartographic project of the Renaissance. Braun spent thirty-seven years as a canon at St. Maria ad Gradus in Cologne, yet dedicated his scholarly energies to the Civitates, commissioning views from artists including Joris Hoefnagel. The atlas was one of the best-selling publications of the late sixteenth century and remains a cornerstone of antiquarian cartography. Sheets from the Civitates are prized by collectors worldwide for their fine engraving, decorative borders, and historical documentary value. This fine engraved plan of St. Omer. Hand colored copper engraving, published in the townbook,Civitates Orbis Terrarum' by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg. The entire series of the,Civitates Orbis Terrarum' comprised six volumes and was published and printed from 1572 towards 1619. Ornated with a decorative title cartouche and a cartouche with a listing of buildings and important places in St. Omer. In good condition for its age (published 1598). Colours well preserved.
