Article description
Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting Lorraine. Published by Janssonius Joan., Amsterdam, 1632-48. Sheet: 375 by 495mm (14 by 19 inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Joan Jansonnius, rich in period detail and historical significance. Johannes Janssonius (1588–1664), known in English as Jan Jansson, was a major Dutch cartographer and publisher based in Amsterdam. Born in Arnhem, he married into the Hondius family and collaborated with his brother-in-law Henricus Hondius to expand and improve the Mercator-Hondius atlas, competing directly with his great rival Joan Blaeu. Under Janssonius, the atlas grew to eleven volumes encompassing maritime, ancient, and celestial atlases. Janssonius maps are characterised by fine engraving, elegant decorative borders, and vivid hand colour, and are among the most collected Dutch Golden Age maps. Decorative map showing the centre of the Lorraine. The map provides an enormous amount of place names, small villages and towns. As well rivers, lakes, woods and mountains are engraved. At the bottom a small milage scale and a small title cartouche. In good condition for its age (published 1632-48). Colours well preserved. Some age-toning and minor imperfections consistent with a document of this antiquity. A condition report is available on request.Joan Jansonnius – Lorraine, vers le Midy. · Original Antique Copper Engraving, Hand Coloured · Janssonius Joan. · Amsterdam 1632-48
