Carl Christian Franz Radefeld (1788–1874) was a Prussian military officer and cartographer who produced a series of carefully engraved maps published by the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen (later Leipzig). His maps of France from the 1840s and 1850s, engraved in steel and hand coloured in outline, reflect the high standards of mid-nineteenth-century German cartography and the detailed geographical knowledge of the era. The Bibliographisches Institut was one of the most respected German publishers of the period, known for accuracy and quality of production. This original antique copper engraving depicts Frankreich 1845 with characteristic nineteenth century cartographic detail — showing towns, rivers, mountain ranges, and administrative boundaries engraved with the precision and artistry of the period.
