Article description
Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting Namur. Published by de Wit, Amsterdam, 1680-86. Sheet: 463 by 543mm (18¼ by 21½ inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Frederick de Wit, rich in period detail and historical significance. Frederick de Wit (1630–1706) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher based in Amsterdam who operated one of the most prolific publishing houses of the later Dutch Golden Age. He acquired many plates from earlier cartographers — including Blaeu and Janssonius — and produced maps of exceptional decorative quality. De Wit's maps are noted for their fine engraving, bold decorative cartouches, and rich hand colour, and are highly regarded by collectors of Dutch seventeenth-century cartography. This original antique copper engraving depicts Namur with characteristic seventeenth century cartographic detail — showing towns, rivers, mountain ranges, and administrative boundaries engraved with the precision and artistry of the period. Published by de Wit in Amsterdam, 1680-86. Dimensions: 463 by 543mm (18¼ by 21½ inches).. In good condition for its age (published 1680-86). Colours well preserved. Some age-toning and minor imperfections consistent with a document of this antiquity. A condition report is available on request.Frederick de Wit – Comitatus Namurci Tabula in Lucem edita á Frederico de Wit. · Original Antique Copper Engraving, Hand Coloured · de Wit · Amsterdam 1680-86
