Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting Dünkirchen. Published by G. Bodenehr, Augsburg, 1704-20. Sheet: 154 by 270mm (6 by 10 inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Gabriel Bodenehr, rich in period detail and historical significance. Gabriel Bodenehr (1664–1758) was a German engraver and publisher based in Augsburg who produced a large number of maps, town views, and topographical prints in the early eighteenth century. His Force d'Europe atlas, published around 1720, contained over 300 town plans and views of European cities and fortifications, making it an important historical documentary source. Bodenehr's maps combine cartographic information with military and topographical detail, appealing to collectors interested in both cartography and military history. This fine copper engraving shows the city of Dunkirk in France and was published in Gabriel Bodenehr's famous serious "Europeans Macht und Pracht", a series of engravings depicting city views, plans, fortresses and castles in Europe. Many plates often are showing fortifications in Hungary and Southeast Europe, Spain, Belgium, Austria and Germany. Gabriel Bodenehr was during this period a successful publisher for maps and prints in Augsburg in Southern Germany. In good condition for its age (published 1704-20). Colours well preserved. Some age-toning and minor imperfections consistent with a document of this antiquity. A condition report is available on request.
