Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting France. Published by M. Bonne, Paris, 1780-88. Sheet: 215 by 323mm (8½ by 12¾ inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Rigobert Bonne, rich in period detail and historical significance. Rigobert Bonne (1727–1795) was a French royal hydrographer who served as Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine and was closely associated with the Dépôt de la Marine in Paris. He developed the Bonne projection — a pseudoconical equal-area map projection widely used in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His maps appeared in the Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre (1780) and in encyclopaedic editions of Raynal's Philosophical History. Bonne maps combine scientific accuracy with fine Parisian engraving. Decorative hand colored map of France by the French cartographer M. Bonne. A detailed map providing many place names and good geographical information. In good condition for its age (published 1780-88). Colours well preserved.
