Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting British Channel. Published by N. Visscher, Amsterdam, 1680-90. Sheet: 475 by 564mm (18¾ by 22¼ inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Nicolaus Visscher, rich in period detail and historical significance. Nicolaus Visscher I (1618–1679) and his son Nicolaus Visscher II (1649–1702) were prominent Amsterdam cartographers and publishers who maintained one of the leading map publishing houses of the later Dutch Golden Age. They published a wide range of maps, atlases, and town plans of comparable quality to those of Blaeu and Janssonius, and their maps are noted for fine engraving, decorative cartouches, and accurate geography. This original antique copper engraving depicts British Channel with characteristic seventeenth century cartographic detail — showing towns, rivers, mountain ranges, and administrative boundaries engraved with the precision and artistry of the period. Published by N. Visscher in Amsterdam, 1680-90. Dimensions: 475 by 564mm (18¾ by 22¼ inches).. In good condition for its age (published 1680-90). Colours well preserved.
