Article description
Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting Duchy of Burgundy. Published by Homann, J. B., Nürnberg, 1720-30. Sheet: 57.5 x 48.5 cm (22.75 x 19 inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Johann Baptist Homann, rich in period detail and historical significance. Johann Baptist Homann (1664–1724) was the most important German map publisher of the early eighteenth century. Born in Oberkammlach, Bavaria, he trained as a notary but turned to engraving and cartography, founding his publishing house in Nuremberg in 1702. Within a decade he had produced hundreds of maps and by 1715 Emperor Charles VI had appointed him Imperial Cartographer — a prestigious title that gave him access to the latest geographical data and a degree of copyright protection. His masterwork, the Grosser Atlas über die ganze Welt, appeared in 1716. After his death in 1724, the firm continued as Homann Heirs (Homann Erben), managed by Johann Michael Franz and Johann Georg Ebersberger, publishing until around 1850. Homann and Homann Heirs maps are celebrated for their large format, vivid hand colour, elaborate allegorical cartouches, and rich decorative quality. This original antique copper engraving depicts Duchy of Burgundy with characteristic eighteenth century cartographic detail — showing towns, rivers, mountain ranges, and administrative boundaries engraved with the precision and artistry of the period. Published by Homann, J. B. in Nürnberg, 1720-30. Dimensions: 57.5 x 48.5 cm (22.75 x 19 inches).. In good condition for its age (published 1720-30). Colours well preserved. Some age-toning and minor imperfections consistent with a document of this antiquity. A condition report is available on request.Johann Baptist Homann – Comitatus Burgundiae tam in primarias ejus Praefecturas q... · Original Antique Copper Engraving, Hand Coloured · Homann, J.
