Article description
Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting Civitates Avenionis Omnimq viarum et aedificior.... Published by Matthaeus Merian, Frankfurt, 1638. Sheet: 26.5 x 34 cm (10.5 x 13,5 inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Matthaeus Merian, rich in period detail and historical significance. Matthaeus Merian the Elder (1593–1650) was a Swiss-German engraver and publisher based in Frankfurt am Main who produced the Topographia Germaniae — a monumental series of topographical descriptions of German-speaking lands with town views and maps, published from 1642 onwards. He also published the Theatrum Europaeum, a chronicle of contemporary European events. Merian maps and town views are highly prized for their documentary detail and fine baroque engraving. This is an attractive bird's-eye plan of Avignon, with the famous bridge in the background. In good condition for its age (published 1638). Colours well preserved. Some age-toning and minor imperfections consistent with a document of this antiquity. A condition report is available on request.Matthaeus Merian – Civitates Avenionis Omnimq viarum et aedificiorum eius pe... · Original Antique Copper Engraving, Uncoloured · Matthaeus Merian · Frankfur...
