Sheet: 42 x 56,7 cm (16.5 x 22,25 inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Nicolas d'Abbeville Sanson, rich in period detail and historical significance. Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville (1600–1667) was the foremost French cartographer of the seventeenth century and the founder of the French school of scientific cartography. Appointed Géographe Ordinaire du Roi to Louis XIII in 1630, he produced hundreds of maps noted for their rigorous methodology and reliance on primary sources over received tradition. His works were published in Paris by Pierre Mariette and laid the foundation for the French cartographic dynasty that continued through the Robert de Vaugondy family. Sanson maps are among the most collected French antique maps, appreciated for their clarity, accuracy, and historical importance.
