Article description
Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting Cales Natura Et Arte Munitissimum Propugnaculum.... Published in France, 1596. Sheet: 28 x 29 cm (11 x 11,5 inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Dominicus Custos, rich in period detail and historical significance. Dominicus Custos (c.1560–1615) was an Antwerp-born engraver and publisher who settled in Augsburg around 1600 and worked for the publisher Hans Ulrich Krafft. He engraved portraits, topographical views, and maps, contributing to the Fuggerorum et Fuggerarum imagines (1618). His town views and siege plans offer valuable historical documentation of late sixteenth and early seventeenth-century European cities and fortifications. This original antique copper engraving depicts Cales Natura Et Arte Munitissimum Propugnaculum... with characteristic sixteenth century cartographic detail — showing towns, rivers, mountain ranges, and administrative boundaries engraved with the precision and artistry of the period. Published by Dominicus Custos in France, 1596. Dimensions: 28 x 29 cm (11 x 11,5 inches).. In good condition for its age (published 1596). Colours well preserved. Some age-toning and minor imperfections consistent with a document of this antiquity. A condition report is available on request.Dominicus Custos – Cales Natura Et Arte Munitissimum Propugnaculum Galliae C... · Original Antique Copper Engraving, Uncoloured · France 1596
