Article description
Original antique copper engraving, uncolored, from the 'Atlas Nouveau' published in Paris, 1700. Depicting Ferrara, this map is a fine example of 1700s European cartography. Image: 473 by 564mm (18 by 22 inches). An attractive and historically significant 18th-century map for the discerning collector. Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (c. 1632–1712) was a French sculptor turned cartographer who became Géographe du Roi (Royal Geographer) to Louis XIV. His large-format maps, produced in collaboration with Nicolas Sanson's plates, set the standard for French cartography in the late 17th century. Pierre Mortier (1661–1711) was an Amsterdam publisher who republished many of the finest French cartographic works, making them available to a broader European audience. Maps from the Jaillot–Mortier collaboration are celebrated for their large format, fine engraving, and elaborate Baroque cartouches, and are among the most decorative antique maps of Italy. This copper engraving, uncolored map of Ferrara, published 1700, exemplifies the cartographic tradition of 1700s Europe. The map is engraved with careful attention to topographic detail, depicting towns, rivers, mountain ranges, and political boundaries with the precision expected of the finest cartographic productions of the period. The hand coloring highlights the geographic features and political divisions of Ferrara, making this an attractive piece for both the collector and the scholar. A fine example from Atlas Nouveau, Paris, sought after by collectors of antique maps of Italy, antique maps of Ferrara, and antique copper engraving, uncoloreds for sale. In very good condition. Light age-toning to the sheet, as expected for a 18th-century map.Jaillot, Alexis-Hubert – Ferrara · Copper Engraving, Uncolored · Atlas Nouveau, Paris · 1700
