Original antique hand-colored steel engraving, published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (S.D.U.K.) in London, 1845. Depicting Sardinia, this map is a fine example of 1840s European cartography. Image: 387 by 317mm (15 by 12 inches). An attractive and historically significant 19th-century map for the discerning collector. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (S.D.U.K.) was a British educational society founded in 1826 under the patronage of Lord Brougham. The Society published the highly regarded 'Maps of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge' series (1830s–1840s), produced in London by Charles Knight and published by Baldwin & Cradock. Engraved by the most skilled English engravers of the period and featuring meticulous topographic detail, these maps set a new standard for popular geographic education. The S.D.U.K. maps are among the most accurate and beautifully engraved English maps of the 19th century, prized by collectors for their combination of scholarly precision and attractive appearance. This decorative map shows Italy with Sicily, Malta, Sardinia and Corsica. Along the coast are many small place names, engraved. At the lower left corner we look to a small part of Africa.
