Article description
Original antique hand-colored copper engraving, published 1720. Depicting Milan & Lombardy, this map is a fine example of 0s European cartography. Image: 485 by 562mm (19 by 22 inches). An attractive and historically significant 18th-century map for the discerning collector. Matthäus Seutter (1678–1757) was one of the most prominent German cartographers and publishers of the 18th century, based in Augsburg. After training under Johann Baptist Homann in Nuremberg, he established his own publishing house around 1717. In 1732, Emperor Charles VI awarded him the title of Imperial Geographer. Seutter published an extensive atlas with over 500 maps, and his output is characterized by richly decorated copper engravings with elaborate allegorical cartouches. While many of his maps drew on earlier sources, his distinctive engraving style and high-quality hand coloring make his maps among the most decorative of the German Baroque period. Seutter maps are held at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. This hand-colored copper engraving map of Milan & Lombardy, published 1720, exemplifies the cartographic tradition of 1720s Europe. The map is engraved with careful attention to topographic detail, depicting towns, rivers, mountain ranges, and political boundaries with the precision expected of the finest cartographic productions of the period. The hand coloring highlights the geographic features and political divisions of Milan & Lombardy, making this an attractive piece for both the collector and the scholar. A fine example from Atlas Geographicus, Augsburg, sought after by collectors of antique maps of Italy, antique maps of Milan, and antique hand-colored copper engravings for sale. In very good condition. Light age-toning to the sheet, as expected for a 18th-century map.Seutter, Matthäus – Milan & Lombardy · Copper Engraving, Hand Colored · Atlas Geographicus, Augsburg · 1720
