Article description
Original antique hand-colored copper engraving, from the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the most important atlas of city views ever published, produced in Cologne, 1617. Depicting Tyrol & Trentino, this map is a fine example of 1610s European cartography. Image: 19,8 x 49.5 cm (7,75 x 19.5 inches). An attractive and historically significant 17th-century map for the discerning collector. Georg Braun (1541–1622) and Franz Hogenberg (1535–1590) were the editors and publishers of the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' (Cities of the World), the most important atlas of city views and plans ever published. Compiled in Cologne between 1572 and 1617, the six-volume work contains 546 prospects, bird's-eye views, and town plans from across the known world. Hogenberg was one of the most accomplished engravers of his generation. Views from the 'Civitates' are universally sought by collectors interested in the history of cities, and are held in the world's leading map collections including the British Library and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Decorative panoramic city view of the city of Brixen in South Tyrol with the rivers Eisak and Rienz. The landscape is ornated in the background with the alps, as well wine yards in the foreground. The view of the city is pretty accurate with the churches, the bridge and the surrounding walls. A fine example from Civitates Orbis Terrarum, Cologne, sought after by collectors of antique maps of Italy, antique maps of Tyrol, and antique hand-colored copper engravings for sale. In good condition consistent with age. Light age-toning to the sheet, as expected for a 17th-century engraving. Centerfold as published.Braun, Georg – Tyrol & Trentino · Copper Engraving, Hand Colored · Civitates Orbis Terrarum, Cologne · 1617
