Original antique hand-colored copper engraving, published 1784. Depicting Rome & Latium, this map is a fine example of 0s European cartography. Sheet: 62 x 49 cm (24.5 x 19,25 inches). An attractive and historically significant 18th-century map for the discerning collector. Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697–1782) was arguably the greatest French geographer and cartographer of the 18th century. A member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres, he revolutionized cartographic methodology by insisting on the critical evaluation of sources and the omission of geographic features that could not be verified. His maps of ancient geography were particularly celebrated, bringing scholarly rigor to the depiction of the classical world. D'Anville's maps are held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and major research institutions worldwide. General map of ancient Italy with coloring contemporary with the watercolor of the borders. At the top of the title are the graphic scales "Milliaria Romana, Leucae Francicae, Stadia Olympica, Stadia". At the upper right is a round inset map of the area around Rome. A plan of the 7 hills of Rome was engraved in the bottom left corner. A fine example from published Nürnberg, sought after by collectors of antique maps of Italy, antique maps of Rome, and antique hand-colored copper engravings for sale. In very good condition.
