Article description

Original antique hand-colored copper engraving, published 1748. Depicting Papal States, this map is a fine example of 0s European cartography. Image: 48.3 x 53.5 cm (19 x 21 inches). An attractive and historically significant 18th-century map for the discerning collector. After the death of Johann Baptist Homann (1664–1724), the Nuremberg firm continued as 'Homann Erben' (Homann's Heirs), maintaining the tradition of high-quality German cartography into the mid-18th century. The heirs continued to publish and update the atlas, adding new maps of regions across Europe and the world. Homann Erben maps retain the hallmarks of the Homann style: fine copper engraving, rich hand coloring, and elaborate decorative cartouches. The firm's output is represented in major collections including the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. A fine impression of this decorative map of Italy. With many engraved place-names, rivers, lakes and mountains. At the right upper corner is a decorative allegoric figurative cartouche. In the left side is the Isle Corsica to see. Inside this map are rivers, place names mountains and any trees pictured. A fine example from Atlas Geographicus, Nuremberg, sought after by collectors of antique maps of Italy, antique maps of Papal States, and antique hand-colored copper engravings for sale. In very good condition. Light age-toning to the sheet, as expected for a 18th-century map.
