From Mallet's Description de l'Univers — the most comprehensive geographical work of its era. Alain Manesson Mallet (c.1630–1706) was a French cartographer, military engineer, and author who served as Sergeant-Major of Artillery under Louis XIV and later as an engineer under Alfonso VI of Portugal. His masterwork, Description de l'Univers (1683, 5 volumes), was the largest and most comprehensive geographical work published to that date, containing maps of the ancient and modern world alongside star charts, city views, and detailed ethnographic and cultural descriptions of every known region of the Earth. A Frankfurt edition was published in 1685–1686 with German-language text. The small-format copper engravings from this work — including charming scenes of indigenous peoples of Florida and the Great Lakes — have a distinctive illustrative quality that makes them highly appealing to collectors interested in the early European perception of the Americas.
