Article description
Copper engraving, uncolored as published. Engraved by Melchior Haffner (Ulm 1660 - 1704), the map is based on the cartographic sources by Daniel Tavernier. This fine engraved map shows the kingdom of Tunquin (Tonkin) with the coastline of Vietnam. The early rare map depicts in its centre the island of Hainan. Along the coastline of this map of Vietnam and Indo-China we find detailled engraved information in German language on place names for example ,Checo' the old residence of the king, as well trading places, harbors and the conditions of the various bays and rivers and also on animals of this region. The attractive map is ornated with sailing ships and an oriental vessel next to a large compass rose. At the lower corner is the title cartouche with a mileage scale. The map was published in Augsburg in Johann Christoph Wagner's travelbook to the Far East: ,Interioria Orientis Detecta oder Grundrichtige oder Eigentliche Beschreibung aller heut zu Tag bekandten grossen und herlichen Reiche des Orients.'
