Article descriptionOriginal woodcut, hand colored in outline and wash, published circa 1580-1620. A highly decorative antique map of Sumatra and the southern part of Malaysia, with Singapore named Cinglolo. Decorative inset with a woodcut illustration showing an elegant man riding an elephant. Sebastian Münster, German-Swiss cosmographer, was a humanist and linguist (1488 Nieder-Ingelheim to 1552 Basel), studied at the Franciscan Order School in Heidelberg, joint the Franciscan Order in 1505, undertook numerous study trips, including to Löwen, Freiburg / Breisgau, Rouffach and Basel, ordained priest in Pforzheim in 1512, 1514-18 lecturer at the Franciscan religious school in Tübingen, from 1518 in Basel, 1524 appointed professor at Heidelberg University, 1529 resigned from the order and professor in Basel, here the original publisher of first published in 1544 and by 1628 in 46 "Cosmographie (Weltbeschreibung), source: Wikipedia.
