Article description
Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting Lotharingia Septentrionalis Loraine vers le Sep.... Published by P. Schenk, Amsterdam, 1690-1704. Sheet: 37.2 x 49,5 cm (14.75 x 19,5 inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Gerard Valk, rich in period detail and historical significance. Gerard Valk (1652–1726) was a Dutch cartographer and globe-maker based in Amsterdam who, together with his son Leonard Valk, published a large series of maps and atlases in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. He acquired many of the original copper plates from earlier Dutch cartographers — including Blaeu and Janssonius — and reissued them with updated cartouches and dedications. Valk's maps reflect the finest Dutch cartographic tradition of the Golden Age, combining rigorous geography with decorative artistry. This original antique copper engraving depicts Lotharingia Septentrionalis Loraine vers le Sep... with characteristic seventeenth century cartographic detail — showing towns, rivers, mountain ranges, and administrative boundaries engraved with the precision and artistry of the period. Published by P. Schenk in Amsterdam, 1690-1704. Dimensions: 37.2 x 49,5 cm (14.75 x 19,5 inches).. In good condition for its age (published 1690-1704). Colours well preserved. Some age-toning and minor imperfections consistent with a document of this antiquity. A condition report is available on request.Gerard Valk – Lotharingia Septentrionalis Loraine vers le Seption. · Original Antique Copper Engraving, Hand Coloured · P. Schenk · Amsterdam 1690-1704
