Article description
Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting Gibson. Published by J. Coote, London, 1760. Sheet: 20 x 31,5 cm (7.75 x 12,5 inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Gibson, rich in period detail and historical significance. John Gibson was a London-based engraver active in the mid-eighteenth century who contributed maps and town plans to several British geographical publications. His harbour plans of French and Mediterranean ports reflect the British maritime interest in detailed coastal cartography. Attractive town plan with decorative cartouche from 'A New Geographical Dictionary: containing a full and accurate account of the several parts of the known world, as it is divided into continents, islands, oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, etc....', published by J. Coote, London In good condition for its age (published 1760). Colours well preserved. Some age-toning and minor imperfections consistent with a document of this antiquity. A condition report is available on request.Gibson – Plan of the City and Harbour of Marseille. · Original Antique Copper Engraving, Hand Coloured · J. Coote · London 1760
