Article description

Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting Regno di Francia diviso né suoi Governi. Published by Antonio Zatta., Venice, 1779. Sheet: 289 by 384mm (11½ by 15 inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Antonio Zatta, rich in period detail and historical significance. Antonio Zatta (fl. 1757–1797) was a Venetian cartographer and publisher who operated from Venice with the privilege of the Republic. His major cartographic work, the Atlante Novissimo (published in four volumes between 1775 and 1785), was conceived as a comprehensive updated atlas of the world, incorporating the latest geographical discoveries including James Cook's Pacific voyages. Zatta held the status of official geographer to the Republic of Venice. His maps are distinguished by their elegant Venetian engraving style, attractive original hand colour, ornamental title cartouches, and decorative compass roses. Today, Zatta's maps are sought after by collectors for their fine presentation and historical interest as products of Venice's vibrant late-eighteenth-century print trade. This original antique copper engraving depicts Regno di Francia diviso né suoi Governi with characteristic eighteenth century cartographic detail — showing towns, rivers, mountain ranges, and administrative boundaries engraved with the precision and artistry of the period. Published by Antonio Zatta. in Venice, 1779. Dimensions: 289 by 384mm (11½ by 15 inches).. In good condition for its age (published 1779). Colours well preserved. Some age-toning and minor imperfections consistent with a document of this antiquity. A condition report is available on request.
