Article description
Original antique copper engraving, hand coloured when published, depicting Chateau Vieux. Published in Frankfurt, 1719. Sheet: 150 by 110mm (6 by 4¼ inches).. A fine decorative example of antique cartography by Allain Manesson Mallet, rich in period detail and historical significance. Alain Manesson Mallet (c.1630–1706) was a French military engineer, mathematician, and cartographer who served as a Sergeant-Major in the artillery of Louis XIV and as an Inspector of Fortifications in Portugal. His encyclopaedic Description de l'Univers (1683), published in five volumes in Paris by Denys Thierry, contained over 600 maps, city plans, and illustrations — covering the geography, history, customs, and costumes of all known parts of the world. Mallet himself drew most of the figures engraved for the book. A German edition was published in Frankfurt in 1684, extending the atlas's reach across Europe. The maps from the Description de l'Univers are charming and decorative, typically small in format with clear engraving and attractive contemporary colour, making them appealing entry-level antique map collectibles. This antique map shows us the old and the new castle. It´s a beautiful bird´s eye view. In good condition for its age (published 1719). Colours well preserved. Some age-toning and minor imperfections consistent with a document of this antiquity. A condition report is available on request.Allain Manesson Mallet – Das Alt und neue Schloß - Chateau Neue - Chasteau Vieux. · Original Antique Copper Engraving, Uncoloured · Frankfurt 1719
