An attractive and historically significant 17th-century map for the discerning collector. Matthaeus Merian the Elder (1593–1650) was a Basel-born Swiss engraver and publisher who worked in Frankfurt. He is most celebrated for his extraordinary series of topographical engravings published in the 'Topographia Germaniae' (from 1642) and related volumes covering Europe and beyond—a monumental project continued by his sons after his death. Merian's city views and panoramas are renowned for their precision, grandeur, and documentary value, providing some of the most detailed visual records of 17th-century European towns. His works are held at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, and major institutions worldwide.
